Obscured 21

  1. Larry's Rebels
    Everybody's Girl (Poulsen) 2:27
    Columbia DO-8368 1968
The highly successful NZ group had settled in Australia by the time of this release. This was the B-side of Halloween which did not chart in Australia; in NZ Everybody’s Girl was the promoted side and reached #6 on the national charts.
  2. Dave Miller Set
A Bread And Butter Day (Miller) 3:19
    Spin EK-2550 1968
The B-side of their third single, a different mix to that on Obscured 11.
  3. Johnny Young
    Hold On (Haskell/Hayworth) 3:11
    Clarion MCL 32752 1968
From the UK-recorded LP Surprises…, a very apt name considering the type of material it contained! Hold On was also notably recorded by South African singer Sharon Tandy.
  4. The Meating
    Back Home (Lawrie/Taylor) 4:03
    Rebel DG270/04 1970
The B-side of the only single by a band that featured pre-Chain Matt Taylor along with Greg 'Sleepy' Lawrie, Tim Piper, John Capek, Trevor Courtney and Yuk Harrison. A short-lived supergroup of sorts! Lawrie and Capek were members of the Carson County Band at the time.
  5. The In Betweens
Boom Sha La La Lo (Poulsen/Woodley) 2:56
    Impact IR1053 1970
Another New Zealand cover of a Hans Poulsen song. The In Betweens had already gained a strong reputation in Dunedin by the time they released this single, which appears to have come out in NZ only. The vocalist is Rob Guest - many years pre-Phantom Of The Opera!
  6. Quartet Mama
Where Did You Fail (Spencer/Tarney/Peek) 3:40
    Decca F13072 1970
The B-side of their second and last single, Joseph. Both songs were due to be released on a Quartet album that never eventuated.
  7. Sons Of Bacchus
    Universal (Musson) 2:38
    Van Dieman VDR-012 1970
The first single by this Tasmanian band on a local label; their next release was Hey Mista [Obscured 17] with the abbreviated name of Bacchus.
  8. Sweaty Betty
    Every Little Thing (Lennon/McCartney) 3:34
    Van Dieman VDR-024 prob. 1971
Maybe closer to the Yes version than The Beatles’! Another Tasmanian band with the A-side of what seems to be their only recording.
  9. Daddy Cool
    Come Back Again (Wilson) 4:53
    Sparmac SPL001 1971
Taken from Daddy Who?, this is the full-length album version which surprisingly has not seen a CD release to date.
  10. Moonshine Jug & String Band
    My Gal (trad) 3:16
    MDS MJ 001 Recorded 1972, released 1994
This track featured on a limited edition cassette that was recorded live at various gigs (plus Rick Brewster’s living room) in ’72. The tape was released to co-incide with the band’s reformation many years later. All recordings were previously unreleased.
  11. Wendy Saddington
I Think Of You (Rodriguez) 4:03
Previously unreleased in audio format 1972
Taken from the early Peter Weir film Three Directions in Australian Popular Music, and credited to Wendy Saddington & Teardrop. This song was never officially recorded by Saddington.
  12. Chris Neal
    Full Moon Lightning (Neal) 3:29
    M7 MLFA-050 1974
From his concept album Winds Of Isis. Neal plays all instruments except for drums (by Laurie Kemp).
  13. Railroad Gin
    Don't Rile Me (Shields/Lloyd) 2:25
    Polydor 2079 036 1974
The B-side of their Brisbane #1 hit A Matter Of Time; this song did not appear on their album of the same name.
  14. Smokestack Lightning
Mellow Down Easy (Willie Dixon) 3:24
    EMS EMS-6002 c.1975
From Don't Nobody Know, the only album for this Adelaide blues band. Members included local blues stalwart Greg Baker.
  15. Company Caine
    Dr Chop (Russell/Gully) 3:35
    Lamington LAM 329 1975
The title track to their extremely rare second album, produced by Ross Wilson. This line-up included Geoff Burstin (gtr) and John Power (bs), pre-Jo Jo Zep.
  16. Vertical Hold
    My Imagination (Mountzouris/Michalopolous) 2:56
    RCA Victor 103888 1981
The first of a couple of local chart toppers for this Adelaide band, though their success was not replicated elsewhere.
  17. The Sports
    Some Brass Thing (Armiger/Cummings) 3:17
    Mushroom K-8388 1981
A re-recording of This Is Really Something that appeared as the non-album B-side of When We Go Out Tonigh”. Horns arranged by Red Symons.
  18. The Kevins
    Romeo Romeo (Ford/Lesson) 3:15
    White Label K 8814 1982
Well crafted pop from this Melbourne band with their only chart success (#21 in Melbourne). Produced by Martin Armiger.
  19. Glenn Cardier
Water Finds Its Own Level (Cardier) 3:24
    Previously unreleased 2007
Recorded live at the Trinity Sessions, Adelaide, May 13 2007 as part of the Songwriters In The Round gig; only the second time all three artists had performed together. The same details apply for tracks 20-22.
  20. Phil Manning
    New Dress (Manning) 3:14
  21. Ross Ryan
    Blue Chevrolet Ballerina (Ryan) 4:21
  22. Cardier, Manning & Ryan
You Never Can Tell (Berry) 3:19

THIS CDR IS FOR TRADE ONLY, NOT FOR SALE. And please buy the stuff if it’s ever released again! Compiled 2007.
