Obscured 17

  1. The Playboys
    The Mean One (Billing) 1:37
    Sunshine QK-952 1965
B Side of the Desperado single as included on Obscured 13.
  2. Bobby & Laurie
Every Second Day (Alan Brite) 2:43
    Parlophone A-8236 1966
"An inventive piece of swirling psychedelia" (Ian McFarlane) & the duo's last single before taking a three year break. It scraped into the Melbourne charts at #41, as a double sided hit with First Street Blues.
  3. The Richard Wright Group
No No No No (Fardon) 2:31
    HMV EA-4778 1966
Written by pre-solo Don Fardon while a member of The Sorrows, this is the rarely-heard B-side of the Sydney band's second single Miss Hargreaves. Members include ex-Missing Link John Jones; drummer Dave Ovenden went on to the 69ers and Bullamakanka.
  4. The Kinetics
    Excuses (Groves) 2:09
    CBS 221309 1966
The debut single for the first band to feature Steve Groves, later of Tin Tin, Bushwackers etc.
  5. The "A" Sound
    Talk About That (Barnes/Lee/Barnes/Parkinson) 2:24
    Festival FK-1340 1966
Their one and only single, perhaps most notable for the fact it was the first recording by a very young Doug Parkinson.
  6. The Tallifer Group
This Happiness Feeling (T.R. Brinstead) 2:03
    Philips BF 413 1968
A-side of this Sydney band's only single - and that's about all the available information!
  7. Judy Stone
    Society's Child (Ian) 3:08
    Festival FK-2795 1969
A fine version of the Janis Ian song, although it does not appear to have charted anywhere.
  8. The Fore Day Rider Blues Band
Got To Get To My Baby (Albert Luandrew aka Sunnyland Slim) 4:37
    Muff, no cat.no. 1969
Another track from their very rare debut album, featuring vocals by Jill Drury and Broderick Smith; this was his debut recording.
  9. Bacchus
    Hey Mista (Musson/Thomas) 3:12
    Van Diemen VDRO-26 1971
Tasmanian band who released a couple of singles on a small local label. This song was co-written by lead vocalist Paul Musson.
  10. Fraternity
If You Got It (Fraternity) 4:00
    Raven NSP-060 1971
Unlike the so-called "single version" on the Raven compilation CD, this is in stereo and you can hear the harmonica! There is no relation between the Adelaide label that released this single and the later reissue label. Reached #2 in hometown Adelaide but did not chart elsewhere.
  11. Chris Neal
    Prelude (Neal) 3:09
    M7 MLFA-050 1974
From Winds Of Isis, a prog-rock opus in the Tubular Bells vein, wherein Neal plays all instruments (except drums and bass on this track). It sold poorly and Neal was last heard of as a jingle writer.
  12. Marcie Jones
    Hurts So Good (Mitchell) 3:33
    Atlantic 100032 1975
B-side of her I Need Your Loving single; also appeared on the That Girl Jones LP.
  13. Ross Wilson
    Who's Gonna Love You Tonight? (Pepperell/Wilson) 4:42
    Oz OZS.1001 1976
From the Oz movie soundtrack. RW is backed by some well-known players including Ross Hannaford and Mick Rogers on guitars.
  14. Tidewater
    When I'm Gone (Davidge) 3:12
    EMS NSP-207 1976
Single taken from Wild Horse Plains, the Adelaide band's only LP and the first recording to feature Greg Champion.
  15. Ol'55
    C'mon Let's Do It (Manzie/Baker) 2:36
    Mushroom K-6659 1976
Their fifth single, which reached #18 on the national chart. Vocals by Rockpile Jones.
  16. The Angels
Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (Brewster/Neeson/Brewster) 3:19
    Albert Productions AP-11048 1976
The original version with the Brewster brothers, Doc Neeson on bass and Charlie King on drums. Produced by Vanda & Young.
  17. Red Symons
    It's Only A Flipside (Symons) 4:06
    Oz OZS.1005 1977
From the Oz Records compilation Debutantes - also released (ironically) as an A-side as Symons' first solo single. The B-side was Stiletto's Nights In Parlour.
  18. Mother Goose
    See If I Care (Dickson/Johnston/Young) 4:30
    Mushroom L36312 1977
A track from the NZ band's Stuffed LP; far more representative of their sound than the novelty hit Baked Beans for which they are best known.
  19. Dr Agony
    Telephone (Hewson / M&T Hunter) 3:12
    Portrait PR 45008 1977
The far lesser-known B-side of April Sun In Cuba. At one stage, Dragon considered using this pseudonym as their official name in the US but opted for Hunter instead.
  20. The Ferrets
    Tripsville (Firth/Miller/Paterakis) 2:53
    Mushroom L36718 1979
The band's last single and also a track on their second and final LP Fame At Any Price, neither of which were particularly successful.
  21. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons
    I Will Return (Camilleri/Faehse/Burstin) 3:28
    Mushroom K-8086 1980
Recorded live at the Bottom Line, New York, July 1980. Taken from a double single, the lead track of which was the studio version of this song.
  22. The Bushwackers
When Britannia Ruled The Waves (Corbett) 4:15
    CBS BA 223052 1983
This line-up of the Bushies included Tommy Emmanuel on guitar and ex-Skyhook Freddie Strauks on drums. A live version of this song has appeared on compilations but the original single has not come out on CD. Written and sung by bass player Roger Corbett.
  23. Glassweb
    National Hero (3:18)
    (Obscured remix)
  24. Freshwater
    Satan (3:05)
    (Obscured remix)
