  1. Max Merritt & The Meteors

    A single from the Meteors’ self-titled LP, recorded in NZ shortly before their move to Australia. The band comprised Merritt, Johnny Dick, Teddy Toi & Peter Williams. Williams went on to form the Groove, while Toi and Dick became the Aztecs rhythm section later in the year.

    B-side of the Melbourne band’s Johnny B Goode single [Obscured 19].
  3. The Final Four
    Hold Onto Your Life (writer unknown) 2:39
    Scope!! SP-007 1967
    Another Melbourne band with the B-side of their only single. They later transformed into The Dream when joined by a couple of members from The Changing Times.
  4. The Questions
    I Can’t Hear You (Goffin/King) 2:25

    The B-side of their third single And Things Unsaid. The Questions changed name to Doug Parkinson In Focus the following year.
  5. Kompany
    The Family Way (Mike Brady) 2:16
    Clarion MCK-1806 1967
    Perhaps better known as Johnny Young’s backing group, this was the B-side of Kompany’s own second and last single Little Joe The Boxer.
  6. Lynne Randell
    That’s A Hoe Down (Hammond) 1:53

    Randell’s follow-up to Ciao Baby was also recorded in New York; this was her last single for CBS. It made #19 in Melbourne, #26 in Adelaide and #55 nationally, and was also released in the US and UK.
  7. Marcie & The Cookies

    B-side of their second and last single White Christmas after which Marcie Jones resumed her successful solo career; Marcie & The Cookies still perform today with the same line-up.
  8. The Valentines
    Build Me Up Buttercup (Macaulay/D'Abo) 2:47
    Previously unreleased c.1969
    Recorded for the Melbourne TV show Turning On. This was a pre-recorded backing track that the band mimed to on the show, but was never officially released on vinyl.
  9. The Clik
    La-De-Da (M. Christian) 3:11
    Festival FK-3407 1969
    Originally known as The Menu, The Clik was a band with a very commercial image; members included Mario Millo (his first group, pre-Sebastian Hardie) and drummer Brian Kirby who later joined the reformed Executives. This was the first of their two singles.
  10. The Groop

    Their final single, released one month after the band split. Not a hit, although they did record one further important piece, the backing track to Russell Morris’ The Real Thing.

    Terry Britten (ex-Twilights) joined with Kevin Peek, Trevor Spencer and Allan Tarney (all ex-Johnny Broome & The Handels, James Taylor Move etc.) in the UK to record two singles. This was the A-side of the first.

    Live, extended version of their biggest hit, from the Sunbury 1972 double LP.
  13. Graham Lowndes
    Till Time Brings Change (Lowndes) 4:41

    One of Lowndes’ best known songs, taken from the Survival’s A Song LP. Artists such as Johnny Farnham and Jeannie Lewis have also recorded the song.
  14. Debbie Byrne
    Da Doo Ron Ron (Spector/Greenwich/Barry) 2:43

    Only the second single in her long career, this version of the Crystals classic was a double A-side, coupled with Boogie Man. It reached #7 in Melbourne and #29 nationally.
  15. Madder Lake
    It’s All In Your Head (Madder Lake) 3:47

    Mick Fettes’ last recording with the band was this non-charting single. It didn’t appear on LP until The Best Of Madder Lake in 1978.
  16. Baby Grande

    Another rare demo from Steve Kilbey’s Canberra-based pre-Church band.
  17. Scandal

    This cover of the Ace song was the Adelaide band’s biggest hit (#23 nationally) and appeared on their only, self-titled album. They had split by year’s end.

    Their last single before changing name to The Nauts. This was a double A side with the song Spies.
  20. Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons
    Rub Up Push Up (“unknown”) 3:04

    Originally recorded by Jamaican band Justin Hines & The Dominoes in the mid 60s. The Falcons version appeared on the B-side of Sweet, and the Dexterity mini-LP.
  21. The Naturals
    On The Alert (Osborne/Evans) 3:20

    Hailing originally from Qld, The Naturals moved to Sydney after signing with Mushroom. This, the first of two singles, did well on the independent charts. Drummer Steve Sowerby later joined the Eurogliders; other members included David Osborne (gtr), Mark Hilton (gtr, kybds), Greta Kamaromy (vcls) and Bill Bloomfield (bs).

    One of the occasional Masters line-ups of recent years - Jim Keays (vcls, harmonica), Doug Ford (gtr), Rob Hornbuckle (bs, vcls) and Tony Day (drums), recorded at the South Adelaide Football Club in 2003.
