Obscured 16

  1. The Vacant Lot
Don't Let Me Wait Too Long (Mansolino / Philp / Palmer / Larkey / Rosa) 2:32
    Columbia DO-4768 1967
A-side of Sydney band's only single. According to Pop Archives: "The writing credits here are to members of The Myddle Class, who in turn came to the song through The Blues Project's Wake Me, Shake Me, but the ultimate source is a traditional gospel hymn."
  2. Marty Rhone
No, No, No, No No (Stephens / Polnareff) 2:48
    Spin EK-1790 1967
Though it only reached #60 nationally, this was his biggest Spin hit. Its French composer Michel Polnareff recorded the song the previous year with the subtitle La Poupee Qui Fait Non.
  3. The Groop
Mandrake Wine (Cadd / Ross) 3:00
From The Vault, no catalogue #
Recorded in London in 1968 but not released until 1989 as a flexidisc with From The Vault magazine.
  4. Freshwater
    Hello Sunshine (Murray Partridge) 4:34
    RCA Victor 101944 1971
Their last single and the only one to include Alison MacCallum on vocals. Made #19 in Sydney in late '71. While this was the A-side, the flip I Ain’t Got The Time seems to be the side that received most airplay.
  5. Kahvas Jute
    I Can't Stop (Wilson) 3:44
    Previously unreleased 1971
The rare 3-piece line-up of Dennis Wilson on guitar, Scott Maxey on bass and Dannie Davidson on drums, with a song that was never officially released. This performance was recorded live for the ABC show Hit Scene, broadcast on May 29 1971.
  6. Alison Gros
    Weaver Of Life (D'Arcy / Goble) 2:55
    Fable FB-087 1971
The B-side of their third and final single All The Days, which only made #91 nationally but reached #17 in hometown Adelaide.
  7. Kelly
    See My Way (Abrahams) 4:28
    Previously unreleased 1971
Melbourne band from the early 1970s. They don't seem to have released any records; this excellent version of a Blodwyn Pig song was likely recorded especially for TV use. Same source as track 5.
  8. Bullet
We Can Make It (Baxter / Azzopardi / Smith) 3:04
    RCA 101961 1971
B-side of this Sydney band's second and last single Leave That Girl Alone. Apart from the Azzopardi brothers [see Obscured 11], bassist Alex Smith went on to join the 69'ers.
  9. La De Das
Morning Good Morning (Borich / Key) 4:34
    HMV SOXLP 7561/2 1972
Taken from the Sunbury 1972 double LP, this extended version was recorded a few weeks before the single's release.
  10. Duck
    Maybe I'm Amazed (McCartney) 3:27
    Warner Brothers 4023 1972
Jon English takes lead vocals on this single from the Laid LP. This is his first recording, pre-dating the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.
  11. Bobbi Marchini & Ted Mulry
I Found My Way (Mulry) 3:04
    Previously unreleased 1973
Bobbi recorded this song as the B-side of her Working My Way Back To You single. Ted’s version appeared on his Greatest Hits LP. Both had the same backing track, and so a combination of the two seemed possible… and here it is exclusively.
  12. Moonshine Jug & String Band
Keep You On The Move (J. Brewster-Jones) 1:54
    The Sphere Organization NCP-127 1973
An original song from the precursor to the (Keystone) Angels. Taken from a now-rare EP that made #5 in Adelaide and scraped into the national chart at #100 for one week!
  13. Railroad Gin
Love Is You (Jansons / Shields / Lloyd) 4:38
    AWA Custom Recording AW-33130 c.1973
From an even more rare EP, handed out at a rock mass held at St Johns Cathedral, Brisbane circa '73/74. Recorded before the band signed to Polydor.
  14. Marcia Hines
    You (Bill Withers) 4:19
    Wizard ZS-124 1975
Not the You that was a hit for Marcia a few years later. This was the B-side of her debut single Fire And Rain and has never appeared on album. Backing is by Baxter Funt.
  15. Finch
Where Were You (Kennedy / Evans / Orford) 4:13
    Portrait PR 45011 1977
One of Finch's more mellow songs, this single made #25 on the national charts and also appeared on their LP Nothing To Hide. They changed name to Contraband not long after. Co-written by their bass player Mark Evans (ex-AC/DC).
  16. Airlord
    Clockwork Revenge (Mackenzie) 6:38
    Infinity L36286 1977
The title track of this NZ prog-rock band's only LP, telling the tale of toys turning on their evil owner. Probably not a true story.
  17. Mondo Rock
    The Breaking Point (McLennan) 4:55
    Oz OZ-11788 1978
Rare non-LP B-side of the band's debut single The Fugitive Kind. Writer Iain McLennan had previously been a member of Sun, Ariel and Richard Clapton’s band and later joined The Sports.
  18. Russell Morris
    Two Minute Warning (Morris)
    Mushroom K 7399 1979
Non-LP B-side of the Thunder Ground single. Probably with the same band as on his One Foot In The Door album - Joey Amenta, James Black, Graham Thompson and Barry Cram.
  19. Spectrum
Jamaican Farewell (Gaze / Rudd) 3:26
    Previously unreleased 2006
Three-piece Spectrum line-up of Rudd, Putt & Robbo performs this well-known Ariel song. Recorded live at the Trinity Sessions, Adelaide on June 18 2006.
  20. Pastoral Symphony
Spread A Little Love Around (2:39)
  21. The Questions
    We Got Love (2:31)
